The Regressive Left is one of the great phrases of 2015. Coined by the Muslim reformer Maajid Nawaz, it describes a section of the left that apologises for Islamism and deems criticism of it as ‘racist’ or ‘islamophobic’.
The key regressives are Chris Hedges, Glenn Greenwald, CJ Werleman, Nathan Lean, Cenk Ugyur and Reza Aslan. They try to blur the lines between criticism of ideas and hatred of people, and twist and lie about what people actually say. The classic example of this being lying about Sam Harris wanting to nuke the Middle East.
As I said, the regressive left is a wonderful phrase, BUT, we must be careful in not just using it as a lazy insult. Rather than writing off opposing views as ‘regressive’, we risk falling into the trap of the regressive left, resorting to insults and ignoring any valid criticism.
Cherish the phrase, but remember it is no substitute for facts and evidence.
